Ben Aspinall, DoorCo’s Head of Technology and Marketing reviews one of the hot topics of FIT Show 2022, door colour. In this article, Ben shares with Glass Times the current trends and how DoorCo is meeting this demand.

DoorCo’s PAiNT colour options featured heavily on our stand at FIT Show 2022, making door colour a real talking point at the exhibition. It’s always a hot topic but it was particularly interesting to represent the trends we see emerging through our prepping/ painting service on the stand and discuss them alongside what our customers and the wider industry is looking for. In this article, we cover some of the most interesting choices that consumers are making to individualise a home, make a statement and add the coveted ‘kerb appeal’ that many homeowners seek for their properties.

As well as closely monitoring our own sales, keeping track of what’s happening on Instagram is key to understanding these trends. From influencers’ posts to engagement on our own activity, by paying close attention to what’s happening on social media, we’re able to respond and evolve our colour offering according to what the consumer wants.

Bolder choices

We’ve talked before about the rising demand for bolder door colours, and post-lockdown confidence in exploring colour has grown even further, from bolder shades to different colourways. Bright colours choices in our PAiNT collection are constantly evolving and we are adding more all the time to satisfy those really looking to make a statement. Our Bright Magma door at FIT was a real standout, not just because of the shade but also thanks to the striking contrast of the black Inox cassette and matching hardware. The black hardware displayed on a few of our doors on the stand sparked a lot of interest, but this trend doesn’t stop with black.

The Sweet Rose Gold collection is also popular as a designer choice and when it comes to traditional doors, we’re seeing greens and clay colours paired with gold hardware. There’s also surge in adding a modern twist to classic door styles with the use of Stainless Steel knob handles being ordered on Traditional Carnoustie doors.

Not all grey

For those looking for something more subtle, grey has previously been the go-to choice. In fact, there are many different grey shades in our PAiNT collection and the Anthracite Grey hardware and FLiP TWiNTONE cassette designs, which will be launched in Anthracite Grey Flat Stipple shortly, that we had displayed on the stand was a real hit.

But, more recently, we are seeing more heritage shades coming to the fore, like Wedgewood blue and Roof Top Terrace green. Rather than the contrasting hardware and glazing choices, these shades are often colour-matched across the door and glazing cassette and paired with Chrome or Stainless Steel hardware.

PAiNT inside

These subtle shades are also growing in popularity for the inside of the door and there is a rising demand for dual painted slabs. Traditionally, doors were left white on the inside, but we are seeing more and more differing colour options from the subtle palette chosen to blend in with the interior design of the home, and quite often combined with a bold colour on the outside.

The perfect finish

Something that was particularly apparent during FIT Show was the interest in the different textures DoorCo offers, like our designer PATiNA finish which is designed solely for the iconic Monza II door to highlight its unique texture. The new Matte Black door colour, and new metallic finishes which we’re developing for FLiP also spiked interest. Having them on display was very powerful as people could really appreciate the true textures and finishes, which are hard to represent in a lifestyle brochure.

Presenting the collection

Marketing is key to making colour easy for our customers. Taking inspiration from many leading paint companies, we’ve created a PAiNT Colour Selector that charts out our wide range of door colour choices. Rather than relying on individual colour swatches, which are often large, cumbersome, and expensive to produce, the PAiNT Colour Selector uses painted colour chips that offer a true representation of the colour in a handy booklet.

DoorCo offers its flexible prepping/ painting service to all customers, no matter the size. Whether you need a fully prepped door or manufacturing support, DoorCo can help.
